Origin: LABRADOR RETRIEVER is one of the most popular breeds of the hunting dogs - apporters. The name comes from the verb "to retrieve" which means "to fetch (shot game)". One can only speculate upon its origin. He might have come from the far North to North America with the Vickings in the end of the 10 th century. It is only certain to occur in New Funland as soon as the 12 th century. It is there that the labrador become more and more resilient from generation to generation. It is also there that it discovered its passion of swimming. It is not strange, then, that it was loved by the fishermen catching cod - the dog could easily fetch the fish which slipped out of the mesh. The first dogs were brougt to Great Britain around 1820 by lord Malmesbury. He started to breed them and he called them labradors.
General appearance: medium size, strudy, strong. Size: male-56-57 cm, female-54-56 cm. Weight: 25-35 kg Head: broad skull, ears-hanging, of medium size. Trunk: broad, deep chest, short, broad and sturdy lumbar parts Tail thick at its root, tapering (so called otter tail), medium size Clothing: short , thick with waterproof lining. Colour: totally black, biscuit/colour ranging from cream-yellow to ginger/ or chocolate/liver/ Temperament: it becomes now more and more often obvious that the labrador is the best friend of man. It is a perfectly even-tempered and psychically balanced dog. Besides, it is cheerful and vigorus. These are the features which make a labrador the most comprehensive. The dog is also attentive, intelligent, quick-minded, it can well work for the police or the army/can be employed to detect drugs, explosives/can help the handicapped/ including the blind, the deaf; or it can participate in so called dogotherapy /therapy throught the contact with dogs/. With its natural ability to retrieve labrador gained popularity among the hunters as a dog for fetching ducks. It can also, and it actually is, simply a faithful darling. Simultaneously it is trustworthy in contacts with children. Requirements: Its extraordinary capability of adaptation made the dog able to adjust to any lifestyle. Nevertheless, it likes water and exercise. That is why, from time to time, apart from ordinary walks, the dog should be given opportunity to swim, since water is its element. |
